Divan bases.
A divan combines a base unit, generally upholstered in fabric, with a mattress. Base units come in 3 types: platform top which are firm and supportive, sprung edge tops which have a layer of springs with varying degrees of fillings to give greater comfort; and slatted tops. The latter are generally found in, but are not restricted to, ottomans and adjustable beds. Beech or wooden slats will give you a bedstead feel with a divan look. The choice is yours!

Mattresses
Mattresses can also be purchased separately for use on a bedstead. Indeed some are specifically designed for that. For those dual purpose models which can be used either as part of a divan, or on a bedstead, when installing on a slatted base, please ensure the slats are no more than 2” (5cm) apart.

If replacing a mattress on an adjustable bed, we recommend you choose one without springs, such as those shown in the Tempur range, or selected models from Dunlopillo.

In all cases, we do not recommend you put a new mattress on an old divan base.

When choosing your divan bed, for access purposes please note the following:

For 2’6 (75cm), 3’0 (90cm), and 3’6 (105cm) wide models, the bases are delivered in one piece.

For 4’0 (120cm), 4’6 (135cm), and 5’0 (150cm) wide models, the bases are delivered in 2 sections, split across the middle, from left to right (east to west).

For 5’0 (150cm) zip/link, 6’0 (180cm), and 6’0 (180cm) zip/link wide models, the bases are delivered in 2 sections, split centrally from top to bottom (north to south).

For ottomans, where the model selected is delivered in sections to be assembled on delivery, the largest piece is usually the same width and depth as the mattress.

In all cases please ensure you have sufficient access to your designated room.

Unless stated otherwise, all headboards shown are optional extras.

Under bed storage can be a great hidden asset! Divan drawers provide great space for your spare linen and other lightweight items. (We do not recommend you use them for heavy items such as books etc.)

If space is tight, in selected models, an end drawer may be more accessible that side ones. However if you have bedside cabinets or fitted furniture, you may find a ‘continental’ option of a half drawer at the head end of the bed to be the most useful.

A number of our divan and mattress ranges are offered in one standard (medium) tension only. Variation in the different models' comfort levels are produced by either the fillings or the material from which they are made. We do recommend you take your time to visit a showroom and try before you buy.

Several of our bespoke manufacturers offer a choice of comfort levels: soft, medium and firm, and make general recommendations of their suitability based on body weight. Combined with various fillings, again it is a matter of personal preference which you choose.

Please note: if the model you select has a zip/link option (5’ (150cm) and 6’ (180cm) sizes only), both mattresses will be supplied in the same tension. If available, should you require a different combination, e.g. soft/medium or medium/firm, please note this in the ‘Special Instructions’ box when placing your order online.
