From pressure-relieving memory foam to pocket springs, at Furniture Village you can find the perfect mattress for you. There are so many mattresses to choose from, with every need, size and level of comfort catered to.
Carefully crafted, designed by sleep experts and incorporating the latest technology, our mattresses will guarantee you the perfect night’s sleep, every night. They’re all built to last, with offerings from all of the market-leading brands.

What are the different types of mattresses?

At Furniture Village, we have mattresses to suit everyone. For example, some sleepers may like the idea of a memory foam mattress, which moulds to the contours of the body, offering excellent support and pressure relief. A gel mattress is similar, but combines a gel layer with a spring or foam base, with the gel beads offering support.
The category with the largest choice is pocket sprung mattresses. This type of mattress has springs sewn into individual pockets that move independently to offer great support.
Also consider latex mattresses. Latex is a durable, natural material that is hypoallergenic and anti-microbial, and ideal for those with allergies or respiratory problems.
Not sure which type is right for you? Our mattress buying guide has detailed information about each mattress type so you can make an informed decision.

Which mattress brands are available?

We work closely with all of the top sleep brands, offering mattresses to cover a wide range of needs and budgets. Some of the mattresses we stock are also exclusive to us.
For a luxury British handcrafted mattress, look at mattresses from Vispring, Harrison Spinks or Hypnos. Each one of these bed brands offers something unique and special, creating mattresses that promise the ultimate in comfort.
Serious sleep technology is on offer from brands like Tempur and Mammoth. The unique pressure-relieving cushioning foam used in Tempur mattresses was actually invented by NASA, while Mammoth’s Medical Grade TM Foam was originally developed for use in the healthcare industry and by elite athletes.
We’re also proud to offer beds and mattresses from well-known and well-respected British brands such as Sleepeezee, Silentnight and Millbrook Beds.

What mattress size should I get?

At Furniture Village you’ll find mattresses for all standard UK bed sizes, from small single right up to super king. In a smaller room, a bed with a single mattress, or even a slightly narrower small single mattress, might be all you need as they’re suitable for a child’s bedroom or guest room.
For a bit more extra room, upgrade to a small double mattress, which could even sleep a couple if required. More room for two can be found with a standard double mattress, however, which should suit most double bedrooms, allowing both people enough space.
Then if you need more room than average, or if one of you is a restless sleeper, a king size mattress could be the best option. It might also suit a larger bedroom, as will super king mattress designed for the most indulgent levels of space and comfort.

Choosing the best mattress comfort grade

The comfort level of the mattress refers to how firm it is, and ranges from soft to very firm. Most types of mattress will be available in a variety of comfort levels. There’s no “right” comfort level – it’s really all about what suits you, and this is determined by your sleeping position and body size and weight.
If you sleep on your side, we recommend you opt for a mattress that allows your hips and shoulders to sink in, keeping your spine aligned. Go for a firmness that’s in line with how heavy you are. For a softer or medium comfort feel, try a latex or memory foam mattress.
If you’re a front sleeper, you might need a firmer mattress to prevent your hips from sinking in too deep which could put pressure on your lower back. Consider a pocket sprung mattress.
Sleeping on your back actually allows more flexibility with your mattress choice as the firmness tends to depend on your weight. Try medium-soft and medium-firm mattresses and see what feels best to you.

Finding a new bed for your new mattress

Choosing the right mattress takes time – and it’s definitely time well worth spending. After all, the right mattress could mean the difference between days, weeks, months and years of great sleep and the exact opposite. When you’ve chosen the perfect mattress, it’s time to think more about style. Whether you’re looking for an upholstered bed frame or a simple wooden bed frame, you’ll find plenty to discover in our vast range of beds.

Mattress FAQs

Read on and become a mattress expert.

How often should I replace my mattress?

Experts suggest that you should replace your mattress about every eight years. This applies to general use, but if you find that your mattress is starting to feel uncomfortable before that, is negatively affecting your sleep, making unusual noises, sagging or damaged in certain areas, and is contributing to allergies, respiratory problems or joint stiffness, then these are also grounds to go mattress shopping.

How do I clean my mattress?

Mattresses inevitably pick up all kinds of dirt, dust and bacteria from our bodies. Air your mattress by stripping it of all bedding – or at least turning down your bedding – daily. If there are any stains to address, read the mattress care label to see which cleaning products are appropriate. We recommend the use of a mattress protector, and this should be washed regularly.

How do I dispose of my old mattress?

It’s really not advisable to just throw a mattress away, as it’s quite a big item to send to landfill. Trying to take it apart, and burning or disposing of individual components is not recommended either. One solution is to try selling it, or contact your local charity shop or recycling centre to see if they would like it. If you’re unable to take it to a recycling centre yourself, your local council might be able to collect it from you instead, subject to a small fee. When you buy a bed or mattress from Furniture Village, we can collect your old bed or mattress at the time of delivery for a one-off fee. We will dispose of it in an environmentally friendly way.

How often do I need to flip my mattress?

Many modern mattresses should not be flipped, as they are designed to be one-sided. If the manufacturer recommends that your mattress be flipped – in order to allow the fillings to resettle and stay supportive – this should be done every two weeks for the first three months and then every two to three months. All mattresses should be rotated so the head end becomes the foot end and vice versa every two weeks for the first three months and then every two to three months.
