At the heart of this look is characterful furniture that feels inviting and homely. “Look for pieces that have been lovingly crafted,” says Jenny. Think oak dining tables with visible grain and handmade velvet sofas layered with throws and hand-stitched cushions. It’s about creating a space that feels used and loved - a space for slow breakfasts, long chats and curling up with a good book.
This is a trend that doesn’t hold back. “Dare to be bold and take your colour, texture and patterns to the max,” says Jenny. Sun-faded yellows, rose pinks and leafy greens sit happily alongside classic checks and floral wallpapers. Pattern-on-pattern is a must. “There’s no such thing as too many cushions! Layer gingham with chintz or stripes with vintage botanicals,” Jenny adds. “The more whimsical, the better.”
Nod to your favourite style periods by placing mismatched designs right next to each other. “This look is about celebrating the familiar charm of style eras gone by,” explains Jenny. From ditsy florals and colour-block cushions to traditional dining chairs and quirky stools, the key is to mix textures and prints with freedom and joy. Patchwork quilts, striped cushions and ruffled edges all bring a sense of lived-in comfort. Jenny’s top tip? “Don’t worry about everything matching – let the mix of styles and designs speak for themselves.”
From a sun-drenched breakfast nook to a storybook-style bedroom, comfort is key. “The beauty of this trend is how relaxed it feels,” says Jenny. A soft upholstered bed frame, layered bedspreads and lots of pillows in contrasting prints make the bedroom irresistibly inviting. Don’t forget a soft-glow table lamp or candle to add a cosy ambience. “It’s about creating spaces that invite you to relax and stay a while,” she adds.
“It’s the finishing touches that make the space feel like home,” says Jenny. Think scalloped edges, vintage-style artwork and floral ceramics. A jug of fresh hydrangeas, a hand-painted gluggle jug or a display of vintage books on a side table can all evoke that countryside cottage feel, no matter where you live. “Mix new pieces with pre-loved finds to give your space a lived-in charm,” suggests Jenny.
