Noticed the sound of birds tweeting lately? Us too. And the lengthening of days as well – although we hardly dare acknowledge it (as though we might somehow jinx the arrival of spring and put it off for another six months). Yes, this time of year is all about the ‘wait’ – waiting for the end of long, dark nights and cold, grey weather, and days that seem to end before they’ve begun. But while it’s far too early to don our lighter jackets and contemplate the prospect of going bare-legged, there’s one thing we can get started with to help satiate our appetite for new seasons, and new beginnings.

We are, of course, talking about the Big Spring Clean – although we’re coming at it from a different angle this year. That’s because we want this to be a pleasant experience for all, and not the overwhelming (and frankly hellish) endeavour it often ends up becoming.

The problem lies in the fact that we usually view spring cleaning as a singular, mammoth task to be tackled once a year. Which doesn’t really make much sense when you see it on paper, does it? Surely, we should be taking a more gradual approach, and easing ourselves into the whole thing slowly to avoid clutter-related meltdowns? The answer is of course, yes. So that’s why we’re here with a series of quick home-refresh tips, which we hope will help you glide into spring with a, well, spring in your step (sorry – had to)

1.Give your storage space a boost

One of the hardest things about spring cleaning is decluttering. And how does clutter amass in the first place? Usually, it’s a lack of allocated space for random bits and bobs that gather instead under our beds, and in tangled masses in the bottoms of our wardrobes. With that in mind, the easiest way to make the process a whole lot easier is to give your storage solutions an upgrade. Invest in a large chest of drawers for your landing, hallway or spare room, and another couple of narrow chests of drawers for unused nooks and crannies around the house, to maximise on space and storage (and style). We love this slim Furnitureland California 6 Drawer Tall Chest of Drawers, perfect for slotting into a spare space in the living room, hallway or bedroom for all those miscellaneous items. With just a couple of additions like these you’ll be amazed at how easy it is to give all that clutter its very own home. How will it save your sanity? Instead of spending hours trying to create space to put stuff, everything has its place. Simple.

2.Pick one big thing to clean a week

Who said you have to tackle the fridge, oven, microwave, windows and stubborn carpet stains all in one go? No one. Yet, for some reason, as spring rolls around we set aside a single weekend (or worse, day) to do all the jobs we’ve been putting off for the best part of a year. It’s time to ditch the far-fetched optimism and tackle your spring clean in bite sized chunks. Create a quick rota and stick to it over the course of a month, and before you know it, your house will be sparkling clean, and you’ll still have plenty of elbow grease left for other parts of your spring refresh. How will it save your sanity? By tackling cleaning bit by bit you’ll be significantly less likely to either a) give up without completing a single job off your list, or b) spontaneously combust mid-oven clean.

3.Get on board with spring trends 2018

Spring cleaning isn’t really about the cleaning, is it? Yes, we want our homes to look spick and span, but we also want to give them a new lease of life – and that means ditching that wintery décor and bringing in some new, spring trends for the coming season. Time to hit the shops. That’s not to say you need to spend a fortune, but even efforts as small as buying a new set of handtowels for your bathroom can give your home that lovely, fresh feeling ready for the spring. This season it’s all about lush green house plants, warm pastel and gelato colours and crisp geometric patterns – which should give you plenty of inspiration for your spring accessory refresh. How will it save your sanity? Two words: retail therapy.

4.Remember, dishwashers aren’t only for dishes

Don’t let your dishwasher’s superpowers go to waste by only using it for dishes. Instead, gather everything from flower vases to plastic toys, toothbrush holders to soap dishes and even ornaments and figurines, stick them in the dishwasher and watch your cleaning efforts diminish right in front of your eyes. How will it save your sanity? Less dusting, less polishing, less cleaning. Need we say more?

There’s something magical about springtime but it can be easy for the tarnish to be taken off when you pile too much pressure on yourself to transform your home in a forty-eight-hour window. This year, start early and tackle the whole thing gradually. It’ll take longer than your usual spring clean blast… but what’s a little time in exchange for your sanity?
