Before you lose any sleep over all the mattress choices out there, we’re here to put all your questions to bed. Here’s how to find the best mattress for you.

What is the best size of mattress to buy?

When you start your search for the best mattress, there are a few things to take into consideration. And mattress size should be at the top of your list. Typical mattress sizes in the UK come in an array of depths, lengths and widths. It’s important to know the standard UK mattress sizes, to consider the size of the bedroom, and to check the dimensions of the mattresses you are considering, as this will help you in your buying process.

The best mattresses for the tall…and the small

Whether you’re looking for the best type of mattress for a child or a new super king for the master bedroom, size really does matter! A bed width can vary from 75 cm for a small single all the way up to 180 cm for a super king, so it’s important to get your measurements just right.

A recommended 10 cm should be added to the length of the bed from the height of the tallest person using it. The width of the mattress works on an individual basis, but studies have shown that the more space we have in dreamland results in a more restful night’s sleep.

The best bed for your bedroom size

We always recommend accurately measuring your bedroom space before you start searching for the best bed and mattress to take pride of place in it. As a guide, your bed should occupy about a quarter of the available floor space. This will leave you with plenty of room for a wardrobe, a chest of drawers and other furniture. If you follow this simple rule you won’t be left with a cramped bedroom where the bed takes up all of the space.

And be sure to consider the size of the entire bed, not just the mattress. A bed frame can increase the amount of space a bed takes up, especially if it's a sleigh bed or has a grand winged headboard . If space is limited, consider a simple ottoman divan bed that does not overwhelm the room and has useful hidden storage too.
