Living: Celebrate maximalist charm and curated eccentricity

In the living room, Pattern Play starts big and bold. Statement furniture brings presence to a space and, through the interplay of styles, eras and genres, creates a distinctive yet authentic pattern of layered forms and finishes. Juxtaposing a classic sofa with a bohemian occasional table and a mid-century sideboard is simply another way to interpret this multi-dimensional trend.

Pattern Play takes a more literal approach in carefully curated living room accents and accessories. Think mismatched ceramic pieces on the sideboard alongside colourful accent cushions and wall art. It’s an aesthetic that succeeds at being both characterful and contemporary, and creates the perfect ambience for cosy nights in.

Dining: Unexpected shapes and textures bring the drama

If the living room sets the scene for Pattern Play, then the dining room provides the stage for something more theatrical. Push textural contrast with a rustic metal and wood dining table softened by the rounded forms of hand-finished ceramics placed on top, and opt for utilitarian dining benches that are the antithesis of the living room’s plush and cushiony sofas.

Keeping patterns, in the strictest sense of the word, to the walls and the floor helps create a striking yet unified space. Bana suggests using exaggerated shapes to add another layer of visual interest. She says, “Seek out unexpected finishing touches like oversized floor lamps, vases and bowls for more of this trend’s curated eccentricity.”

Bedroom: Where patterns play more quietly

The Pattern Play bedroom provides a soothing interlude from the high-drama of the dining room and the eclecticism of the living room. A plush upholstered bed frame or headboard provides the perfect backdrop for an array of colourful and pattern-rich accent cushions, and makes your bedroom the comfy retreat you need it to be.

To create a more restful ambience as you prepare for sleep, prioritise patterns that coordinate harmoniously. Think rugs and throws with neat perpendicular stripes, gentle circles and arcs, and multi-sized colour blocks.
