Hallway runners are a must in the modern home. Not only do they bring a splash of colour to your space, but they also provide much-needed protection for your floors and plenty of comfort underfoot. Our collection boasts some stunning designs that are perfect for bringing real elegance and sophistication to your landing or hallway.

What is the difference between a runner and a rug?

Runners and rugs are both used to add colour and underfoot comfort to lots of different spaces in our homes, from living rooms and bedrooms to utility rooms and hallways. So, what’s the difference? The main difference between rugs and runners is their size and shape. While rugs come in pretty much every size and shape imaginable, runner rugs tend to be long and thin to fit narrower spaces. Runner rugs are great for protecting flooring in high traffic areas like landings and hallways, and they’re also an easy way to create symmetry and visual interest in these spaces too. If you have a particularly long hallway, you might consider using multiple runner rugs with small gaps between them. This method can break up the length of your hallway and make it feel like part of your wider interior design scheme. Rugs, on the other hand, are the perfect choice for the main rooms of the home. They’re a great way to introduce colour to living rooms and bedrooms and can act as an anchor point for the rest of your decor. There aren’t really any rules when it comes to rugs: some people love the extra comfort rugs provide on wooden floors while others appreciate the colour contrast against a carpeted floor. No matter what flooring your home has, a stylish rug will never be out of place.

Should a runner rug cover the whole hallway?

When it comes to interior design, there really aren’t any rules. Usually a runner rug covers the majority of your hallway, with gaps of about 4-7 inches on either side. Leaving a little space on each side helps create visual symmetry in your hallway and creates an instant impression of considered style. However, you can use a hallway runner to create a wall-to-wall carpet effect if that is the look you prefer. The best way to work out how much of your hallway you need to cover is by measuring it. Most of our designs measure around 25 inches across and 95 inches lengthways. You’ll want to make sure that your rug is slightly shorter than your hallway too. Similarly to leaving space at the sides, leaving space at either end ‘frames’ and elongates your hallway, creating the illusion of a bigger space. This is a fantastic way to increase the sense of space in more compact homes like flats and studios. You’ll also find that placing a rug in the centre of your hallway acts as a focal point for the rest of your furniture. This makes styling your space a lot easier as you have a central motif that brings every element of your look together.

How should I style a runner rug?

When it comes to styling a runner rug, there are a few tips and tricks we’ve learnt over the years that will help take your hallway from drab to fab. The first thing to consider is the type of flooring in your hallway. Traditional black and white checkered tiles will be beautifully complemented by a more neutral hallway runner while plain wood flooring is the perfect backdrop for a striking abstract design. No two hallways are the same, and don’t be afraid to clash colours and patterns if you want to make a real style statement. It will be the first thing your guests see when you welcome them into your home and you want to leave them with a good first impression! Once you’ve settled on the style of hallway runner that would suit your hallway best, it’s time to think about two key things: storage and decoration. As well as being the entrance to your home, your hallway also needs to be stylish and practical. Those two interior design concepts don’t always go together, but luckily we have lots of cleverly designed furniture that brings them together with ease. Our collection of statement sideboards and console tables is perfect for adding more storage to your hallway. Many of these space-saving designs boast handy drawers and baskets for shoes which helps keep your floor clutter-free, but they’re also stunning pieces of furniture to look at. For a traditional look, pair a handcrafted oak console table with a potted plant, trinket dish and letter holder to keep your post and keys organised. Looking for a home for muddy boots, chunky coats and winter knits? Check out our collection of hallway storage designs. These hallway-friendly styles have coat pegs, shoe baskets and shelves to help make organising your family’s belongings a breeze. They’re spacious enough for your outdoor bits and bobs but compact enough to fit neatly against your hallway wall, so you don’t have to worry about sacrificing precious floor space. When you browse our collection you’ll find comfy hallway benches, shoe storage units and more - plus, they come in all kinds of styles, from urban industrial to French country. Decorating your hallway is your chance to set the tone for the rest of your home’s interior and show off your personality. Big on maximalism? Think statement vases, vibrant feature walls and a piece of beautiful wall art. And if you prefer a more minimalist aesthetic, opt for a simple chandelier overhead, a neutral hallway runner and a rustic oak storage bench.
