Home accessories buying guide

Home furnishings and accessories transform a house into a home – but how do you choose the perfect piece of art, the right light fitting or the rug that ties your décor together? Read on for tips, advice and considerations to help you choose the perfect homeware.

Measure up

As with your furniture, with home accessories it’s important to measure up – especially when it comes to mirrors, wall art and rugs. When hanging artwork, leave at least 3 to 6 inches between pieces and make sure the centre of the group of artwork or individual piece of artwork is at average eye level – 57 to 60 inches from the floor.
Measuring the furniture that accessories will sit on is also important, for example it’s important to keep table lamps in proportion to side tables and bedside tables. A mirror or artwork above a mantelpiece should ideally measure around two thirds the width of the mantel.

Be careful when hanging items on your wall

When you are hanging heavy artwork or mirrors, be sure to follow the hanging instructions and use the fixings provided. If your mirror or wall art is particularly heavy, then make sure the wall is sturdy enough to support it.

Keep your home accessories in proportion

Try to make sure your home accessories are in proportion to your room. A large chandelier will never work in a small living room, while a small light fitting will look lost where the room has a large, high ceiling.
