Make your home a magical winter wonderland for Christmas

Glistening snowflakes, frosted trees, and plenty of glittering baubles. This year all we want for Christmas is festive maximalism, and Lauren Hugget from our Home Design Studio has just the look. Join us as she unwraps the secrets to a beautiful winter wonderland interior.

Start with a neutral base palette

We’ll get to the sparkle and shine soon enough, but first we have to start at the beginning. “A clean, neutral palette will act as an empty canvas” explains Lauren. “Stick to warmer hues like creams and beiges to keep it cosy.” Keeping it simple at this stage will give your accent pieces more impact later on. For walls and ceilings, COAT’s Warm Neutral Swatch Pack is a great place to start. It includes nine of their most popular warm neutrals on easy-to-use eco-friendly peel & stick samples.

Metallics are a must

“No winter wonderland is complete without plenty of sparkle” says Lauren, and we couldn’t agree more. Think glam Christmas and you’re on the right track. Festive winter decorations like stars and tinsel are a good place to start, but don’t be afraid to bring some shine to your big furniture too. “Chrome dining sets are perfect for winter décor with their silvery shimmer,” says Lauren. Look for metallic finished coffee and side tables and home accessories to really add some sparkle.

Embrace winter décor

Now’s not the time to be shy with your decorations. Lauren recommends bringing in traditional Christmas motifs like bows, wreaths and garlands to build a wintry yet cosy atmosphere. “I’m a huge fan of evergreen foliage at Christmas,” says Lauren. “Hanging a wreath finished with ribbon bows and a little sparkle here and there is an easy way to create your winter wonderland interior.”

The best part is winter décor works all over the home, from your bedroom to your dining room. Try framing your bedroom window with a garland, hanging a wreath over your sofa, or even creating a stunning centrepiece for your dining table. And of course, you can’t forget a well-decorated Christmas tree, stocked with baubles and lights.

Textured fabrics are your friend

“A winter wonderland interior is all about staying cosy,” explains Lauren. “Soft, chunky fabrics should be a staple this season.” We’re talking throws, blankets, and bedding - try to find the snuggliest fabrics you can and layer them up. Look to velvet and chenille upholsteries for your seating and beds to soften your space even more.

Finish it all off with some comfy scatter cushions in complementary colours and a thick rug to keep your feet from the cold. “Don’t forget the accessories!” says Lauren. “Choosing the right finishing touches is what will really elevate your interior to winter wonderland status.”

Light it up

With darker evenings it’s crucial to have the right lighting to keep the vibe warm and cosy. “Lamps are just what you need to illuminate your winter décor. It’s great to have a ceiling light for when you need the extra light, but for cosy evenings in, table and floor lamps are all you need,” explains Lauren.

We have plenty of lamps to choose from, so you can find the perfect match for your seasonal style. Choose warm white LED bulbs to avoid making your winter wonderland feel too cold. Bulbs in the region of 2700-3000K are ideal as these replicate the warm glow of incandescent bulbs more closely.
