What is the best mattress size to buy?

For many of us, buying a new mattress can be a tiresome task. As the many choices start to overwhelm us, what starts off as an exciting purchase can quickly turn into more hard work than relaxation. As we spend over a third of our lives in bed, and sleep is so important for our health, it’s important to get it right.
Guides Hints & Tips

What size mattress should I buy?

When you start your search for the perfect mattress, there are a few things to take into consideration. Mattress size should be at the top of your list.

Typical mattress sizes in the UK come in an array of depths, lengths, and widths. It’s important to know the standard UK mattress sizes, to consider the size of the bedroom, and to check the dimensions of the mattresses you are considering, as this will help you in your buying process.

What are the different UK mattress sizes?

A single mattress size is 90cm in width and 190cm in length.

A small double mattress size is 120cm in width and 190cm in length.

A double mattress size is 135cm in width and 190cm in length.

A king size mattress size is 150cm in width and 200cm in length.

A super king mattress size is 180cm in width and 200cm in length.

Who is the mattress for?

Whether you’re purchasing a mattress for a child or a new super king for the master bedroom, size really does matter! A bed width can vary from 75cm for a small single all the way up to 180cm for a super king, it’s important to get your measurements just right.

A recommended 10cm should be added to the length of the bed from the height of the tallest person using it. The width of the mattress works on an individual basis, but studies have shown that the more space we have in dreamland results in a more restful night’s sleep.

Where will the bed go in the room?

We’d always recommend measuring up your bedroom space before you start searching for your perfect bed and mattress. Many interior designers follow the 60-30-10 rule when it comes to decorating with colour, and calculating the layout of your room should be no different.

The idea behind this rule is that for every three parts bedroom (which includes where your furniture and walking room would be), there should be one part which accounts for your bed. If you follow this simple rule you won’t be left with a cramped bedroom where the bed takes up all of the space.

What mattress type do I need?

It essential that your mattress type matches your needs, to guarantee you catch those Zzzz’s. If your first priority is posture, then breathable memory foam mattresses like the hybrid from Dormeo Octaspring mould to the shape of your body whilst offering flexible support.

A pocket or coil sprung mattress, such as those in the Vispring collection, provides soft yet supportive springs which contour to your body for maximum comfort.
