Caring for your new furniture

Now that you’ve chosen to invest in some beautiful new furniture from Furniture Village, we’d like to help you keep it looking good as new for many years to come.

On Delivery

  • Before your furniture is delivered, please clear enough space for our Premier Delivery team to maneuver it safely into your room.
  • Once you have accepted your furniture and all the packaging has been removed, take a few minutes to inspect it. Make sure you are completely satisfied before the delivery team leaves.
  • If you have wooden floors, use a protective felt on the feet of your new furniture to prevent scratching.
  • If your furniture appears out of line when it is assembled, check that your floor is level.  You may need to contact a French Polisher to adjust legs, feet or hinges as required.
  • When positioning a free-standing wardrobe or wall unit, leave at least a 1” (2.5 cm) gap behind them so air can circulate.

Day to day care

  • Always follow the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions and use the products they recommend.
  • Dust your furniture with a lint-free cloth.
  • Remove finger marks with a slightly damp cloth. Avoid using detergent.
  • We don’t recommend silicon or spray polishes either - they can leave a residue on the surface of your furniture.

Caring for different finishes

  • Lacquered easy care finish
Dust daily and wipe occasionally with a damp cloth followed by a dry duster.
  • Waxed finish
Polish along the grain every 3 months with a good quality natural beeswax.  Use a soft duster to buff up and retain the natural look of your furniture, and avoid abrasive cleaners.
  • Oiled finish
You will need to ‘feed’ your furniture with linseed oil every 3-4 months. Keep a cloth specially for your furniture, and make you don’t touch it with soaps and detergents.
  • Stone or travertine
Wipe any marks or spills with a slightly damp cloth and then polish with a soft dry cloth. Use a few drops of a neutral cleaner, or stone soap and warm water for cleaning.
  • Fabric or suede
Vacuum fabric or suede chairs at low power using the soft furnishings attachment.
  • Leather
Wipe leather with a damp cotton cloth. If you need to use soap, make sure it is doesn’t contain harsh detergents.

Troubleshooting

  • Accidental spills
Blot up the excess immediately. Don’t try to remove the stain with excessive water or detergent. Professional cleaning or repair is usually the answer.
  • Sun damage
Wooden products change colour with exposure to light. Rotate any ornaments to avoid patches of colour where they have stood. Leave your dining table fully extended if possible, or expose the leaves to light to avoid colour differences between them and the table top.
  • Stability
Check the stability of tables and chairs regularly. You might, from time to time, need to tighten bolts and other fixings.

10 tips to make it last

1. Don’t place furniture too close to direct heat or air conditioning units.
2. Make sure the air in your room is not too humid or too dry.
3. Always move furniture by lifting. Dragging or pushing can damage fixings and affect stability.
4. Carry stone or travertine table tops vertically, never horizontally to move them.
5. Use table mats on stone surfaces to protect the finish from hot plates and kitchenware.
6. Never put hot dishes or cups onto a table top or cabinet.
7. Take care with sharp objects such as cutlery and pens and avoid dragging crockery across your table.
8. Fit shelves and units according to the manufacturer’s instructions and don’t overload them.
9. Don’t place heavy items on drop down leaves or doors.
10. Never rock backwards or stand on dining chairs.
