For best advice we recommend you talk to a Furniture Village sales consultant. Before your visit,
it is worth considering the following:
Location
- Wooden furniture will be affected by its environment. If the atmosphere in your
room is very dry, as conservatories are, the wood can twist and warp and joints
may widen or open up in gaps.
- Plants in the room or a small humidifier can improve humidity and help your wooden
furniture. Alternatively, you might consider glass and metal or stone furniture.
- Please avoid placing solid wooden furniture, in particular, oak products, on under
floor heating.
Solid wood furniture vs. veneers
- Most of our wooden furniture is solid timber harvested from sustainable forests.
Some woods are, however, just too expensive to use in solid form, and that is where
skilled use of veneer can bring more exotic and unusual woods into your home for
a reasonable cost.
- Veneered furniture often uses a manmade substrate for its frame and as such won’t
react as strongly as solid wood to extremes of temperature and humidity. This makes
it far more suitable for the tops of units designed to house electrical goods such
as hi-fis which give off a great deal of heat.
- You may find solid timber and veneers used together in a piece of furniture. Our
consultants will be able to distinguish them for you.
Dining sets
- If you don’t have room for carvers, consider buying additional side chairs which
can be stored in another room. Choosing a co-ordinating fabric or finish will still
allow you to create the effect of a traditional dining set.
- Try the chairs out at the side and ends of the table. Make sure there is enough
room for your knees. You should be able to flex your legs to be comfortable during
dinner parties.
- If you like a particular style of dining set, ask our sales consultants about the
size you need. Often there are alternative sizes not on display. We also have extensive
catalogues from most of our suppliers, some of whom will custom make exactly what
you want. Our sales consultants will be happy to get a quote for you.
- If space is tight, consider an extending table which allows extra seating when you
need it.
- Always measure the dining table fully extended with the seats pulled out as if they
were occupied. You need to get round it easily carrying hot dishes.
Display cabinets and sideboards
- If a display cabinet is too big for your room, the base unit can often be sold separately.
Bedroom furniture.
- Bedsteads are normally slightly wider and longer than the standard size mattresses
that fit them. Make sure you have enough room to walk round the bedstead easily.
- Wardrobes are large items of furniture. Many are made to come apart for easy access.
Please ask the bedding specialist for advice if you have little room to manoeuvre
- Care for wooden bedroom furniture in the same way as dining room furniture.
Measuring up
Always make sure your new furniture will fit your room, and can be delivered easily
into your house.
Please measure carefully. If you need help, please ask our sales consultants.
You may find some larger items can be delivered in more than one piece. It is worth
being absolutely certain before you place your order. Once your furniture is in
production, we can’t cancel without a charge being made.
