Ready to transform your bedroom? If you’re wondering how to choose bedroom furniture, we’re here to help. Our bedroom furniture buying guide helps you decide what bedroom furniture you need, walks you through different bedroom furniture styles and answers all your bedroom design questions.
Choosing bedroom furniture is easy, right? You just need somewhere to sleep and a place to put your clothes. But once you start shopping for bedroom furniture, you’ll find there's much more to think about – like who’s going to be using the bedroom, bedroom size, how much to spend on bedroom furniture, where to buy bedroom furniture and more. Start by asking yourself a few key questions.
This is probably the most important bedroom furniture question. Different people have different bedroom furniture needs. And those needs may even change over time.
Two people may need twice as much furniture as just one person. After all, there’s potentially twice as many clothes, shoes and accessories so you may need to be clever with storage solutions, especially if it’s a small bedroom. And there may also be disagreements over furniture priorities and design styles.
Aside from the essentials – a bed, hanging space and drawer storage for clothes, and a bedside cabinet – consider how else the bedroom might be used. If this is your room, do you want to be able to work in it? You might need a desk and a bookcase. Do you like to sit up in bed to read? Make sure a padded headboard is on your bedroom furniture shopping list.
Children’s bedrooms are often small in size, so you might want to consider storage solutions that fit under kids’ beds like bunks beds and high sleepers. Take a look at our children’s bedroom furniture buying guide to learn more. It’s also a good idea to think long-term and create a room that can easily transition into a teen space with a bunk bed that converts to two single beds, for example.
If you’re furnishing a teenager’s bedroom from scratch, you may well be enjoying plenty of input from the future occupant. In the meantime, think about creating a room with different zones for sleeping, doing homework and chilling out. Balance the necessities – like a desk – with more interesting pieces like a chair bed that’s perfect for sleepovers.
Unless you’re very popular and have people staying every weekend, chances are your guest bedroom may also double up as a TV room, home office or general storage area. A multi-purpose space like this needs multi-purpose furniture like a sofa bed and perhaps a small wardrobe with hanging space (for guests) and shelves (for your own storage).
The size of your bedroom is obviously very important when you’re deciding what bedroom furniture pieces – and what style – you want. Your bedroom furniture layout will be more inviting if the size of the furniture is proportional to the size of the room.
In theory, having plenty of space should make creating the perfect bedroom furniture layout easy. But even in a large bedroom, it's a good idea to exercise restraint. Keeping things clean by choosing simple and minimal bedroom furniture rather than very large pieces can help create a more relaxing ambience.
Maximise space in a medium-sized bedroom by opting for sleek furniture like semi-fitted sliding door wardrobes and neat divan beds with drawers. This will ensure that there’s room for a couple of statement pieces like a dressing table or an accent chair, or an extra chest of drawers if you need plenty of clothes storage.
Compact bedrooms can be just as stylish and inviting as larger bedrooms. Be sure you measure carefully and have a really good idea of your available space. Keep an eye out for furniture that’s specifically described as compact, opt for tall chests of drawers to maximise floor space, and choose items with hidden storage like an ottoman bed frame.
You can’t change the shape of your bedroom, but you can choose bedroom furniture that makes the most of it. When planning your bedroom furniture layout, be sure to account for doors, windows, radiators, alcoves and low ceilings.
Square bedrooms generally allow for different bedroom furniture layouts. Think about first impressions – you don’t want to open the bedroom door to be faced by a wall of furniture. It’s also a good idea to place the bed facing the window, especially if you have a nice view, or make a feature of a large chest of drawers or gentleman's wardrobe against an otherwise empty wall.
With a longer, narrower bedroom, you may be restricted as to where you put the bed, likely the largest piece of furniture in your bedroom. Think carefully about the size of bed you choose – a king or super king size bed might be your first choice but a double bed could work just as well for you and free up useful space for other pieces of bedroom furniture.
If yours is an older home, your bedroom may have traditional features like a chimney breast, sloping ceilings, alcoves and small nooks. Try to look on these design challenges as creative opportunities. That nook may be a great place for a bookcase or small dressing table. And how about putting a lovely accent chair in that bay window?
Many people wonder how much to spend on bedroom furniture. A large furniture budget can give you more flexibility, but a smaller budget might encourage creativity. Whatever your budget, we have a huge choice of bedroom furniture ideas.
If you’ve allocated a decent budget to your bedroom furniture, you might want to consider:
Some furniture makers like Ercol offer multiple pieces in one signature look. This takes away the hard work of deciding which chest of drawers to pair with which wardrobe as everything in the range is designed to work beautifully in combination.
There’s nothing quite like handcrafted bedroom furniture – especially if it’s made in Italy by ALF. Explore the collection and you’ll find that ALF bed frames, wardrobes and chests of drawers are the definition of sophisticated elegance.
For sleek European bedroom style, look at the sliding door wardrobes and spacious chests of drawers crafted by German furniture makers Rauch. Here, stylish exterior finishes are complemented by well-designed functional interiors.
A limited budget doesn’t have to put limitations on the bedroom you design. You may just have to be a little more creative. Think about:
At Furniture Village we’re proud to offer a huge range of bedroom furniture. Many pieces are crafted by famous brands, but plenty are not. If you’re in the market for well-priced, well-made furniture, we can help.
Spread the cost of your bedroom furniture by buying pieces one at a time. Opt for a look like oak bedroom furniture which makes it easy to mix and match individual pieces from different ranges.
You don’t have to buy a complete set of bedroom furniture to give your bedroom a whole new look. Refreshing smaller items like bedside table lamps, throw cushions and wall art, or changing the colour scheme of a room can be surprisingly transformative.
Thinking carefully about what your bedroom needs to offer you will help you make your bedroom furniture ideas shopping list. Want to make sure you’ve thought of everything? Review your shopping list against the Furniture Village bedroom furniture checklist below.
For most people, a bedroom is much more than simply a room with a bed. Taking stock of what your bedroom means to you can really help you define the bedroom furniture you need and answer the question – what furniture do I need for a bedroom?
When your home’s living spaces are limited in scope or size, choose furniture that turns your bedroom into an additional living area and make it a place where you can escape to work in peace and quiet, read your favourite magazine or chat on the phone. Consider adding a well-cushioned small sofa (or even a sofa bed if you have the room), a dressing table that doubles as a desk, and a bookcase or shelving unit.
If your bedroom is more than simply a place to sleep, then think beyond furniture necessities and consider pieces that help you relax. You might want an accent chair or even a recliner so you can spend time in your bedroom without having to lie on the bed. Mood-lifting wall art or even tactile soft furnishings like wool rugs and velvet cushions can enhance your sense of well-being. Be kind to your senses with aromatherapy candles and soothing music.
There’s nothing wrong with a bijou bedroom. In fact, many people prefer a cosy and well-designed room rather than a sprawling open space. At Furniture Village, you’ll find plenty of bedroom furniture ideas for small rooms like stylish single beds, small two-door wardrobes and narrow chests of drawers. Choose carefully and you may find you even have space for a small accent chair or footstool.
Well, it is called a bedroom, isn’t it? If getting eight solid hours a night is your primary objective, then focus your energies on finding the absolutely most comfortable bed available. This might be a divan set – which is a divan base plus mattress – or a bed frame with a separately-purchased mattress. Take a look at the Furniture Village mattress buying guide for lots of helpful hints and tips.
If yours is a busy family, finding space to get away may be a challenge. Instead of getting frustrated by constantly having to watch somebody else’s favourite TV programmes, use your bedroom to create a grown up space with a second TV, a super king size bed and a large sliding door wardrobe with built in drawers, shelving and hanging space so that you can stay organised and clutter free.
You probably have a good idea of the pieces of bedroom furniture that you really can’t do without. Take a look at our checklist and see if there’s anything missing.
Key pieces for your bedroom furniture shopping list:
As well as being a bedroom furniture essential, a bed is also a good way to set the style and tone of your bedroom. Choose a traditional metal bed frame for a classic bedroom look, or a sleigh-style bed frame if you prefer more glamorous decor.
A divan set comprises an upholstered bed base plus mattress and is often the affordable bed option. Many divan bases come with optional storage drawers or a lift up ottoman-style base, a good idea for a smaller bedroom with limited storage. Take a look at the Furniture Village bed buying guide for more information.
A headboard can turn any bed into the focal point of your bedroom. Most are well cushioned and neatly upholstered and are available in many different styles, from traditional buttoned and winged to simple modern styles with geometric stitching and fluting.
Key pieces for your bedroom storage furniture shopping list:
Most wardrobes are either hinged door wardrobes or sliding door wardrobes. Hinged wardrobes are usually more traditional in style and require more space so you can open the doors. Sliding door wardrobes tend to be sleeker and have that stylish fitted wardrobe look. Some wardrobes even have handy mirrored doors.
Remember, two medium-sized chests of drawers will take up much more room than one large chest of drawers. For maximum functionality, look for 6 drawer chests which have two stacks of drawers side by side.
Choose a bedside table with drawers or a shelf and drawers to maximise useful storage. If you tend to have a few books on the go at one time, make sure your bedside cabinet has enough room for all your reading material plus a table lamp.
If you have enough room, add an accent chair to your shopping list. This is an easy way to give any bedroom a touch of relaxed class, and they’re the perfect place to sit while you talk on the phone or chat to your significant other. Just be sure you don’t use it as a place to store clothes - there are plenty of Furniture Village wardrobes for that.
Dressing table sets – dressing table, mirror and stool – are the unsung heroes of the effortless morning routine. Having a dressing table in your bedroom is a much more relaxed way to get ready and guarantees that you’ll avoid the usual bathroom crush.
Extra bedroom seating is always useful, and a bench that also has extra storage under the lid scores double points. Look out for ottoman-style benches with cushioned tops or even storage footstools for the foot of the bed. A traditional-style wooden blanket box is a great alternative.
Ever wish you could take a nap during the day? If hopping into bed feels a little too indulgent, consider a day bed or a similarly relaxing chair like a recliner, a chaise or even an armchair with footstool.
While not technically furniture, lighting can make a big difference to the ambience of the room. Think about reading lamps for bedside cabinets, a ceiling light with a dimmer switch, and a floor lamp or another table lamp to create mood lighting.
Be sure to allocate some of your bedroom furniture budget to those stylish accessories that can turn an average bedroom into a rather fabulous space. Consider rugs – an essential if you have wood floors – plus cushions, throws and decorative items including wall art, vases, ceramic pieces and even a clock.
The bedroom design style you choose can determine the size and type of the Furniture Village bedroom furniture you need. Take a look at our review of popular bedroom furniture styles and find your favourite.

Q. What piece should I start with when designing my perfect bedroom?
A. Start with the bed as this will be the biggest piece of furniture in the room – or at least the one that occupies the most floor space. Your bed frame or divan set and headboard can also help set the bedroom furniture style for the whole room. Plus, once you’ve chosen your bed, you’ll have a good idea of how much room you have left for other pieces. On that note, it’s a good idea to create a scale plan to make sure you can fit everything in. Be sure to do this before you spend any money, in case you need to downsize from a super king to a king size bed, for example.
Q. I’m struggling with how to choose bedroom furniture. Is it essential that all my bedroom furniture matches?
A. There’s no rule that all your bedroom furniture – wardrobe, chests of drawers, bedside table and dressing table – has to be from the same range. You may prefer a more eclectic look, or you may have existing pieces that you want to incorporate into your new bedroom design scheme. Having said that, furniture that matches in terms of colour, finish and scale can help a smaller room feel larger. It might also be more economical to purchase a matching set of bedroom furniture.
Q. My bedroom seems to end up housing general clutter like piles of ironing and stacks of books. Help!
A. Many people spend time and money furnishing the perfect living room and dining room but ignore the bedrooms. The first thing you need to do is change your mindset – having a bedroom you enjoy is essential for feeling relaxed which can have a really positive impact on all aspects of your life. The second point is more practical. Be sure you invest in plenty of storage furniture. Perhaps a wardrobe with drawers could be the designated place for the ironing. And if you like having books in your bedroom, make room for a bookcase.
Q. I’m craving a relaxing zen-style bedroom – but my bedroom is really small. How can I create a feeling of space in a tiny room?
A. Create physical space by getting rid of furniture that you don’t need, and be sure to choose pieces that eliminate the need for more furniture. For example, a bedside table with drawers might mean you can manage with a smaller chest of drawers, and opt for a bed with underbed storage like a divan set with drawers or an ottoman storage bed. Keeping walls, floors and furniture a similar colour will help open up the room. Go easy on wall art and rugs as too many pieces will break up the space-enhancing effect of empty walls and floors and make your room feel smaller.
Q. We’re redecorating our master bedroom for the first time in 15 years. It’s very likely that we won’t redo it for another 15 years. How can we ensure that our new look won’t date?
A. It’s tempting to follow fashion when you have the opportunity to redesign a whole new room, but you’re wise to think long term. Unless your home has a specific design aesthetic that you want to continue in the bedroom, we suggest you opt for classic or traditional furniture like high-quality oak bedroom furniture. This type of furniture may not be at the cutting edge of interior design style, but it will never go out of fashion. If that doesn’t appeal, opt for bedroom furniture that’s minimal and neutral and use wall colour, rugs, art and accessories to introduce a design look. This approach allows for a budget-friendly update every five years or so.
Q. Should I choose a bed frame or a divan base?
A. From a comfort point of view there’s no difference. Both provide great support to any type of mattress. Divan bases tend to be more minimal in style – the upholstery is usually simple without too much embellishment although you can add a headboard if you want your bed to be more of a focal point. A divan base will be exactly the same size as its mattress and so takes up less room than a bed frame which may extend at the head and foot ends. You’ll find a wide range of design styles in bed frames including wooden, metal and upholstered bed frames.
Q. I prefer uncluttered spaces, but I still need clothes storage. What should I do?
A. Assuming that you need both hanging space and drawer space, we recommend choosing a piece of furniture that does both. Some sliding door wardrobes have built-in drawer units. Consider rotating your clothes seasonally and storing the clothes that you won’t be wearing for a while in the storage compartment of an ottoman bed.
Q. We’ve just bought our first home and money is tight. What’s the best way to furnish our new master bedroom?
A. Congratulations on your new home! Make your money go further and create a bedroom you both love by taking your time. Start with the bed and choose a mattress for comfort rather than price – chances are you’ll have it for close to ten years so think of it as a long-term investment in good sleep. If there’s a bedroom furniture style you love, then hunt out complete bedroom furniture sets as this can be more economical than buying piecemeal.
