When to buy a new bed or mattress

Follow our bed care tips and a well-made bed frame and mattress should last for years. But there may come a time when you’re ready to move on to something new.

Sometimes it’s hard to know when to say goodbye. But if any of these signs sound familiar, it may be time to look at upgrading your bed or mattress.

1. You spent the night on a hotel bed and slept much better.
Our sleep needs change as we age and the mattress that you loved five years ago might not be right for you today.

2. You consistently wake up in the morning sore, achy or just plain tired.
It sounds like your mattress isn’t meeting your sleep needs any more. While it might not be worn out, it still might be time for a new one.

3. Your mattress is more than seven years old.
Age alone isn’t a reason to replace a mattress but the seven-year mark often represents the turning point for some mattresses.

4. You can feel the springs poking through the mattress cover.
This is a sure sign that your mattress needs to be replaced. It’s not comfortable, it’s not good for your spine or posture, and it’s definitely not going to get any better.

5. You and your partner roll towards each other during the night.
If the internal structure of your mattress has been compromised by excessive wear in one spot – resulting in roll together – it’s probably time to get a new one.

6. Your bed frame creaks or wobbles.
First check that all feet, base and headboard connections are securely tightened. If that doesn’t help, it might be time to purchase a new bed frame.

7. You’ve lost or gained weight.
The mattress that was right for your old self might not be providing the right level of support for you now.

8. Your mattress has obvious lumps and bumps.
A mattress that’s showing visible signs of wear and tear like lumpy fillings probably needs replacing.

9. You’ve run out of usable bedroom storage space.
A replacement bed could have all the answers. Consider a divan bed with drawers or, for extra generous storage space, an ottoman storage bed.

10. You’re giving your bedroom a makeover and want a new look bed.
Now’s the perfect time to create the stylish retreat you’ve also wanted. A luxurious upholstered bed makes a great bedroom focal point.

If you’ve had your old mattress for a few years you may be out of the swing of shopping for a mattress. These days there are many, many different kinds of mattress available, from memory foam to latex, hybrid to pocket spring, and much more besides. Learn more about all the options and get useful tips on buying a mattress in the Furniture Village mattress buying guide.

Buying a new mattress is a great time to invest in a new divan base or bed frame. You should avoid using an old bed base or bed frame with a new mattress as this can compromise the level of support your new mattress provides and cause unnecessary wear and tear on the mattress’s cover.
