Storage furniture buying guide

Read the Furniture Village storage furniture buying guide for everything from beds with storage to slider wardrobes.

Sideboards

These storage units, traditionally for cutlery and crockery, are stylish, practical and versatile. No longer associated with just one room, a sideboard can sit beautifully in a hallway, serve as a TV stand in the living room and, of course, store glasses and tableware in the dining room.

TOP TIP: For smaller rooms, choose a shallow sideboard, or replace it with a compact console table.

Bookshelves

Most of us already have bookshelves in our homes. These days, they’re not just for books but can be used as multipurpose storage units where you can display decorative objects, photographs, and even media equipment.

TOP TIP: Tall, narrow shelves are ideal for awkward spaces, alcoves, or between other pieces of furniture.

Display cabinets

Used for displaying everything from ornaments and books to glasses and vases, the display cabinet is the perfect item of storage furniture for tableware in the kitchen or dining room and for anything you want in the living room. Choose between modern and traditional designs and wood and metal or ultra-modern high gloss cabinets. Some include integral lighting, to show off your precious mementoes.

TV units

TV and media stands are no longer simply functional living room storage units to house your TV, but are well-considered pieces of storage furniture in their own right. Modern TV stands are available in a variety of finishes, some with drawers, and some shaped to fit awkward corners. Many are perfect for all types of media storage too.

Wardrobes

The ultimate in dedicated home storage. Choose a traditional design for a characterful look, or maximise your bedroom storage potential with semi-fitted wardrobes cleverly designed so there’s a place for everything.

TOP TIP: In a smaller bedroom choose a slider wardrobe or a wardrobe with bi-fold doors to save on floor space.

Chests of drawers

It’s all about saving space these days, and if you’re in to ‘vertical folding’ your clothes, a chest of drawers is a must-have. Most new chests of drawers now have smooth opening, soft-closing drawers. And they’re not just for the bedroom, they can be useful in the study for paperwork, or in the hall for storing hats, gloves and whatever else you might need when you leave the house.

Bedside cabinets

If you need more than a table by your bedside, bedside cabinets with drawers or cupboards (or both) are a must and are ideal for storing everything close at hand. If you like the coordinated look, find a range of bedroom furniture you like and match your bedside tables, chest of drawers and even bed frame.

Divan beds with storage and ottoman beds

For space saving storage in the bedroom a storage bed is a must, whether a divan bed with drawers or an ottoman bed where the mattress lifts with ease to reveal plenty of hidden bedroom storage.

Storage footstools

A place to sit, an impromptu coffee table or simply an ottoman footstool with storage for magazines, remote controls or whatever you want. No wonder everybody loves the ultimately versatile storage footstools.

Storage coffee tables

They sit at the heart of the living room, so why not put them to use to store things you’d like to have close at hand. Coffee tables with shelves, coffee tables with drawers and chest coffee tables with storage all make sure you can put your hand on that magazine, remote control or puzzle book with ease.

Chaise sofas and corner sofas with storage

Last but not least, storage sofas are increasingly popular in this space-conscious age. Why not make the most of your chaise sofa or corner sofa’s roomy chaise end and use its hidden storage to keep throws, family games and general living room clutter out of sight?
