If you need help achieving the look, browse our five minimalist bedroom ideas to find your favourite. Each takes inspiration from another popular design trend to ensure that your minimalist bedroom’s vibe is cool and stylish, not cold and clinical.

1. Clean and simple: all-white bedrooms

An all-white bedroom is the very definition of minimalist style. But achieving that pared back look isn’t just about painting the walls white and adding a few pieces of furniture. All-white minimalism is surprisingly complex, especially if you want a space that feels warm and inviting.

White, white or white

All white doesn't have to mean brilliant white. Browse any paint retailer’s website and you’ll quickly realise that white comes in an array of shades. Farrow & Ball, for example, has over 30 shades of white so you can introduce a hint of peach or pink, a touch of sunshine yellow or a warm taupe glow and still stay true to your minimalist goal.

Spotlight on accessories

And, of course, a white bedroom is the perfect backdrop for a handful of well-chosen and colourful accessories. A few pops of colour keeps things interesting and gives an all-white bedroom a little extra charm and personality. We suggest sticking to a single colour– a yellow vase, a yellow velvet cushion, a yellow-themed piece of wall art and so on – to keep the look simple and minimal.

Furniture that functions

The success of an all-white minimalist bedroom absolutely depends on it being clutter free. Choose bedroom furniture that’s inherently minimal with clean lines, smooth finishes, light on decorative features and, importantly, comes with plenty of interior storage. Handleless sliding door wardrobes with built-in drawer units score points from all angles.

2. Bring the outside in: natural bedroom ideas

Turn to nature to bring your minimalist bedroom idea to life. Just as everything in nature has a singular purpose with nothing extraneous, a minimalist bedroom inspired by natural bedroom ideas features colour and texture in perfect proportion and feels inherently well-curated.

A room with a view

If the vista through your bedroom window is in any way rural or pastoral, make this a focus of your design scheme just as you would a large piece of wall art. Consider placing a (low) bed frame under the window, to keep visual interest firmly in that area. A blind rather than a curtain – or no window treatment at all – will ensure that nothing detracts from the view

Be original with features

How can I make my bedroom more earthy? If that’s your goal, be sure to capitalise on any unique features and natural textures that your bedroom already has. Wood floors, an exposed brick wall, oak beams and rough plaster walls give context to a natural bedroom look. Avoid fully covering the natural patina of floors and walls – stick to a few smaller rugs and more diminutive prints and paintings – so that you allow their natural beauty to shine through

Foliage and flowers

Instead of traditional accessories – wall art, family photos – use natural greenery to bring colour your space and inject personality. Introduce a secondary colour on rotation like pink hyacinths in the spring and yellow roses in the summer or place a Japanese-inspired arrangement of branches on a chest of drawers.

3. Work with wood: rustic bedroom ideas

Plain and simple with plenty of modern country charm, the minimalist bedroom viewed through a rustic lens is a calm and understated space that doesn’t try too hard. Make the most of the warm natural tones and textures of real wood furniture to breathe life into this minimalist bedroom idea.

Pale and interesting

For the minimalist rustic bedroom idea, wood tone matters. Think Scandi-style blond bedroom furniture or a light-toned wood chest of drawers and wardrobe set. If you love oak bedroom furniture, opt for pale oak rather than dark-stained wood. And be sure to choose a single-hued colour scheme that enhances your chosen wood. Ash wood furniture, for example, looks beautiful against pale grey or dark green walls.

Texturise your space

Look out for furniture and accessories that have distinctive textures to set against your simple monochromatic colour palette. A rattan bedside table, wicker light shade or a sisal rug are easy and relatively inexpensive ways to bring home the textures associated with rustic bedroom ideas.

A knotty solution

With a sturdy and characterful wooden bed frame as its focal point, your minimalist rustic bedroom needs little else. Make up your bed with superior linens – go for the highest thread count you can – as the juxtaposition of natural wood and silken sheets will help deliver on the rustic minimalist aesthetic.

4. The original minimalist aesthetic: mid-century modern bedrooms

Simple, functional and beautiful, mid-century modern bedroom style is innately compatible with a minimalist approach. In this look, bedroom chests of drawers have rounded edges and simple recessed handles. Bed frames have planked or slatted headboards. And decorative accessories are bold and geometric rather than fussy and floral.

Fluid lines, clean curves

Use Ercol’s wood bedroom furniture to create a space that pays homage to mid-century style while being completely contemporary in terms of well-crafted comfort. An Ercol bed frame with a spindle headboard or smoothly rounded legs is a timeless way to enjoy mid-century minimalism in your twenty-first century bedroom.

Colour pops

Give your minimalist bedroom a mid-century spin with carefully selected secondary colours – a moss green rug, wall art with bursts of orange or mustard, or a teal duvet cover or throw. If bright colour boldly daubed feels too maximalist, introduce subtle hints of colour in the spines of the books on your bedside table.

Period pieces

Let your furniture and accessories speak to your mid-century minimalism. Ercol’s butterfly chair, an iconic design first introduced in 1956, makes a lovely accent piece in a gently retro and pared-down bedroom, or opt for a pair of Anglepoise-inspired desk lamps on your bedside tables.

5. Spacious, airy and light: Hampton-style bedrooms

Looking for a minimalist bedroom idea that feels sophisticated and well-curated as well as clean and uncluttered? A Hampton-style bedroom – inspired by the luxury homes of The Hamptons, a collection of exclusive beach communities on the eastern end of New York’s Long Island – strikes the perfect balance between luxurious elegance and effortless style.

Coastal colours

A focus on blues, greens and beiges – a subtle representation of the tonalities of sky, sea and sand – will give your bedroom that classic coastal feel. Simple yet sophisticated, coastal colours are inherently relaxing and speak to high-end beach houses and boutique hotels.

White-washed wood

Hampton-style bedroom furniture and accessories feature the pale wood and pastel colours that evoke smooth driftwood, sand-polished shells and sea glass. White-washed wood or white-finished furniture quickly gives any bedroom a touch of coastal chic.

Contemporary comfort

Not too fancy, not too studied, the Hampton-style minimalist bedroom idea has comfort at its core. Pile up the neutral scatter cushions in shades of off-white, taupe, beige and cream, and make room for an easy chair or chaise.

It's fair to say that when you’re creating a minimalist bedroom, the answer isn’t necessarily black and white. There really are countless ways to interpret this ever-stylish aesthetic through colour, texture, furniture and accessories.
