The Millbrook Beds story

Walter Croll opened his small upholstery and bedding workshop in the Millbrook area of Southampton in 1946 as the majestic ships from Cunard, P&O and Union-Castle shipping lines sailed into Southampton Water.

When the Union-Castle Line awarded his workshop a contract to refurnish and carpet its entire fleet, the success of the young company was assured. It also marked the beginning of a tradition of superior craftsmanship – a tradition that’s evident in every mattress, divan base and headboard that Millbrook Beds makes today.

FAQs

What is a Millbrook mattress made from?

Millbrook Beds has been producing fine beds and mattresses for over 75 years. With a proud heritage of superior craftsmanship, all Millbrook beds and mattresses are handcrafted in Britain to this day. But what makes a Millbrook mattress so luxurious, so comfortable, so rejuvenating? Of course, the skill of the craftspeople who produce them plays a big role in the quality of the final product. But without the right materials for the job, these beds and mattresses would be nowhere near the level they are.

Every Millbrook mattress is carefully filled with layers of natural materials, selected for their breathability, comfort, and durability. These include English cotton; cotton has been used to make bedding for centuries because it’s natural, breathable, and far better than synthetic materials for temperature regulation. As well as cotton, Millbrook mattresses also contain Hampshire wool and cashgora, both renowned for their ability to insulate the body. British Hampshire wool has a natural crimp that acts like a natural spring, giving your mattress a bounce and resilience not found with other wools. Cashgora is an ultra-soft fibre produced by cross-breeding angora and cashmere goats, adding another layer of luxurious comfort to a Millbrook mattress. Finally, each mattress contains silk, another natural fibre offering enhanced comfort and moisture control. When combined, these luxurious, natural materials offer a mattress that is soft, moisture-wicking, temperature-regulating, and most importantly, unbelievably comfortable. The Hampshire collection, exclusive to Furniture Village, showcases these wonderful materials in a range of luxuriously comfy Millbrook beds and mattresses that have to be experienced to be believed. Take a look at our Hampshire 4000 and Hampshire 6000 divan sets to see for yourself.

A Millbrook mattress also uses pocket springs for exceptional comfort. Each pocket spring is placed in its own individual pocket which is then sewn shut, keeping the springs separate and ensuring there is no ‘roll-together’ during the night. These springs conform to the shape of the body, providing superior levels of comfort throughout the night. Millbrook also use unique Zonal edge springing, giving more strength to the sides of the mattress and preventing you from rolling off the bed.

Are wool mattresses good?

Wool has long been used as a material in clothing, but it’s also highly sought after as a material for mattresses too. A wool mattress has many benefits thanks to the remarkable properties of wool, and Millbrook know this well. This is why they use this natural material in their luxurious mattresses, alongside the other fabulous materials like silk and cashgora.

Sleeping on a wool mattress has several benefits. Firstly, temperature regulation; wool isn’t only great for keeping you warm, it also helps to keep you cool when you’re too hot thanks to its natural insulating and moisture-wicking properties. If you have trouble sleeping because you’re too hot or cold, a wool mattress could be the answer. Another benefit of wool is its natural hypoallergenic properties, as well as its resistance to dust mites. This is due to wool’s ability to absorb and desorb moisture, creating a dry environment hostile to the growth of bacteria, fungus and dust mites. Wool also absorbs harmful volatile organic compounds and traps them in its fibres, further reducing the allergens in the air around you. And lastly, a wool mattress is an eco-friendly mattress choice as wool is 100% natural and biodegradable, so the environmental impact of your mattress is greatly reduced.

Which Millbrook mattress is most environmentally friendly?

The Millbrook PureTech range uses a pioneering eco-friendly material instead of foam. This material – Nemoflex® – is made from recycled fibres, and is full recyclable at the end of the mattress’s life, making the PureTech an eco-friendly mattress that makes no compromise on comfort. The PureTech is also filled with natural English cotton and Hampshire wool, two more environmentally friendly materials, rather than synthetic materials that require manufacturing and cannot be recycled.

If you’re looking to reduce your environmental impact, choosing an eco-friendly mattress is a great place to start, and Millbrook Beds produce a great range of mattresses using natural materials that are far kinder to the environment than mattresses using large amounts of synthetic, unrecyclable foams and fabrics. Our PureTech 1000, PureTech 2000 and PureTech Pillowtop are all fantastic options.
