Get the Look: The Terracotta Trend

Inspiration & trends

There is a rustic beauty about terracotta. Its warmth works well in any room you choose to incorporate it in, bringing a natural element indoors and making for a vibrant and earthy space. This clay based medium can come in a range of shades, from sunburnt orange through to soft amber and rich brown and offers characteristic charm and comfort.

Set to be a huge interior trend in 2017, designers are rediscovering its allure and it’s easy to see the appeal and elegance of a feature that is reminiscent of Spanish villas and Mediterranean retreats. Whether you want to use terracotta as a focal colour in the home or subtlety within accent pieces placed sporadically throughout a room, there are many ways to introduce this trend into your home due to its fantastic versatility.

Terracotta floor tiling

This is of course, the classic and most obvious way to incorporate terracotta within the home. It is a centuries old tradition that is coming back into focus with its raw and handmade quality. The tiled terracotta floor is a very bold choice, but if done correctly can really bring some historical richness to the room. If you feel that tiles would be too cold for your home, or would prefer a cheaper substitute, then why not try a vinyl alternative to emulate this look.

Statement sofa

Terracotta doesn’t have to be confined to the floors, why not make a statement in your living room with a rust coloured sofa or brown leather chesterfield and accessorise the surrounding area with neutral tones and colours? This way your sofa is sure to stand out tastefully as well as add extra warmth to the room.

Terracotta cushions and throws

If you prefer accenting with bolder colours, adding terracotta cushions and throws is a perfect way to experiment with this trend. This way, you don’t have to commit to the trend fully, but instead are free to add a splash here and there. You can also test the waters with different textures to bring a little bit of extra life into the lounge, so whether you prefer leather, faux fur or velour, remember to bring in that extra tactile element with a terracotta twist. The same can be said of your throws if you want to add character to the backs of your sofas.

Terracotta accent pieces

Accent pieces have the power to complement and contrast your chosen décor, something that a splash of terracotta colour or texture could utilise in your space. Plant pots are a beautiful way for bringing life and greenery to a room and have the ability to enhance that Spanish villa feeling whilst adding traditional charm. Alternatively, you could have terracotta colour vases that can bring that explosion of colour in a slightly more subtle way to your home. An ombre vase showcases a wide range of terracotta colours and is a great way to compliment a wooden dining table or oak sideboard.
