As we see the last of the balmy summer days, autumn starts our migration towards home and cosy evenings in. The transition from BBQ’s and days spent in the park to evenings at home can be difficult, however, the Autumn Retreat trend is the perfect solution. This interior trend is led by the changing of seasons and our relationship with nature, dominated by tactile and warm materials, woodland prints and rustic elements.
The interiors stylist, journalist and author of Home for Now (CICO Books), Joanna Thornhill (www.joannathornhill.co.uk), shares her expertise on interior trends with Furniture Village. "Dark, inky blues continue to be a popular choice for AW15, offering a way to tap into the trend for dark interiors yet with a little more colour and interest then simply going for grey. When teamed with other berry tones, the look is cosy and sophisticated - perfect for the cooler months to come.
Joanna continues “copper is still huge yet is increasingly being mixed with other warm metals, from gold and brass to pewter, for a more rounded, eclectic look. And, summer florals are being replaced with more Eastern European, folk-art-style blooms, with their sister trend, botanicals, moving away from the kitschy Club Tropicana styles seen in high summer in favour of a more muted palette of greens and neutrals, allowing the natural pattern of the leaves to shine."
Elma Malik, Online Buyer at Furniture Village, gives her insight on upcoming trends this season:
While it is very tempting to install bi-fold doors to merge your garden with your home’s interior, fortunately there are less drastic options for bringing nature indoors. Think a chunky, oversized wool throw across your bed, along with heavy cottons and rustic linens to engage the senses and bring homely comfort.
You can further work the trend with white, grey or black cushions, which will mirror the cooler shades of the skies outside. Alternatively, if you are a fan of patterns, geometrics in a muted hue or woodland motifs, like subtle plants and trees are very on trend for autumn and can add a real sense of relaxation and comfort to your home.
To really evoke the feeling of relaxed grandeur and casual comfort you can add a statement rug with rustic elements or speckles of colour.
If you want to take this cosy and comforting trend to the next level, think about a luscious, soft leather armchair to add some understated glamour to your living room. Alternatively, you can add an edge to your interior with wire frames to evoke an industrial feel and show the element off with a warm glow from a solid metallic lamp in a copper or any other metallic shade.
