Bramley Apple and Cheese Pie Recipe

From the 3rd to the 9th of February is Bramley apple week!

A few facts that you may not know about Bramley apples:

  • The first Bramley apple tree was grown from pips planted in 1809 by Mary Ann Brailsford in Nottinghamshire 
  • The original Bramley tree is still producing fruit, 
  • It is only grown in Britain, 
  • When cooked the Bramley apple becomes golden and fluffy which is why it's perfect for deserts.

And so to celebrate the wonderful Bramley apple here is a recipe for a Bramley apple and cheese pie- sounds a bit odd but just think how well cheese and apples go together...

Ingredients

6 cups sliced Bramley apples
2/3 cup sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1/4 cup corn flour
1 pastry for double-crust pie
1 1/2 cups grated cheddar cheese
1 table spoon butter
milk (for brushing dough)
Combine the apples with the sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and corn four and set aside.  
Line a 9-inch pie pan with half the dough. 
Sprinkle cheese in the bottom of the pan over dough. 
Place filling over top of cheese, chip the butter over top of filling. 
Cover with top dough. 
Close and crimp edges. 
Brush with a little milk and sugar, cut a few vents. 
Bake at 375 degrees for about 1 hour (No less than 40 minutes). 
Check with a knife in the middle to see if apples are cooked.
