Getting a good night’s sleep can have all sorts of benefits which you may not be aware of. Getting 7 to 8 hours of quality sleep a night can make you happier, help you learn and process information, and can even help you lose weight.

How long do we sleep?

We spend on average a third of our lives in bed, meaning that by the time we are 50 we have slept for roughly 16 years. This means that even though getting the best night’s sleep possible may not be high on your list of priorities, it is a particularly important part of our lives, affecting everything we do.

Because sleep plays such an important role in our lives, the Sleep Council have renamed this September Sleeptember to bring awareness to the amazing benefits of getting a good night’s sleep and how having the right bed can improve quality of sleep and therefore life. In fact, a sleep council survey showed that investing in the right bed is especially important as 10% of people attributed their bad night’s sleep to an uncomfortable bed.

What can a bad night's sleep mean?

Even if you don’t think your lack of sleep is impacting you, it may be an underlying cause of other problems. A study in Canada showed that after a bad night’s sleep, people were more likely to crave junk food or stodgy carbohydrates the next day. Frequently having these cravings can lead to excessive consumption of these types of foods and therefore weight gain.

In Briton 70% of us admit to getting less than the recommended 7-8 hours’ sleep a night and this has drastically increased in the last 6 years as our lifestyles have become ever more hectic, busy and technologically dependant. This needs to change, therefore this Sleeptember we will be giving you tips on how to get the perfect night’s sleep when you lay down on your mattress.

Getting a good night’s sleep can help you feel happier and healthier, look more radiant, make it easier to combat stress and help you learn new things every day. Make this September Sleeptember and take the time to make sure you have the right bed, diet and lifestyle to get the good night’s sleep you need and deserve.
