4 Reasons the Height of Your Bed is Important

Sleep guide

When it comes to finding the perfect bed, comfort is the most important thing. However, there are other important issues that should influence your final decision. One key consideration is bed height. Low vs high is a question most people will ponder when buying a new bed. Does high or low suit your design aesthetic? Or is it a practical consideration, where one is better than the other for your physical needs such as your height or your age? Without your realising it, the height of your bed makes a significant difference both design wise and in functionality to aid a comfortable night’s sleep.

In light of this, at Furniture Village, we’ve gathered together 4 reasons why the height of your bed is an important factor to consider when buying a new bed for yourself or your family.

Ease of access for older people and those with a physically ability

The height of a bed is especially important for those who may not be as physically able, or for the elderly. If the bed frame is too low, then getting out in the mornings can be a physically draining experience. Getting out of bed from a lower position puts a lot of unnecessary strain on the body and requires extra work from your muscles. However, a high bed allows you to simply slide out and land on your feet – a better alternative by far for those who may struggle with their mobility.

For those who, through age or circumstance, movement is a struggle an adjustable bed can make life much easier. Using a remote control to rise and recline, the occupier can be helped to a sitting position so that getting out of bed is a simple, trouble free process. A much better way to start the morning.

High beds and low beds and their impact on a room’s aesthetic

At one point in time, having a grand height to your bed meant that you were an affluent person, so it was a popular fashion amongst Victorian gentry. Usually accompanied with luxurious duvets, pillows and blankets, the grandeur of a high bed suits antique themed bedrooms and rooms with high ceilings.

For those with smaller bedrooms, a low bed actually creates the illusion of extra space – so it’s a common device in modern designs. Low beds can also be inspired by a fascination with Japanese culture and design.

Your height is a huge contributing factor to the height of your bed

Research shows that the optimal height of a bed frame and mattress is thought to be around 25 inches from the ground, so that your feet can rest flat against the floor, while at the same time your knees are not higher up than your hips.

This obviously changes depending on the height of the person in question. If a person is taller, the height of the bed should correlate with them, so a higher bed is the better choice. If the person is shorter, then the height can be lower to accommodate this.

Storage space or clutter-free?

Where there is a tall bed, there is more opportunity for storage. Many divan beds offer drawers in the base meaning that you can store away any of your personal possessions. Low beds don’t necessarily offer you this option, so you may need to have that clear out you’ve always been meaning to have as you no longer have the space to hide clutter away.
