5 Christmas Activities to Get You in the Festive Spirit

Lifestyle

With Christmas just around the corner, it’s hard not to feel stressed with the huge to-do list you’ll likely have. From last minute shopping in crowded supermarkets and shops, to dragging the tree down from the loft, it’s enough to try anyone’s patience.

But Christmas is a time for happiness and goodwill, so it’s time to shake off your inner Scrooge and embrace the festivities.

Say goodbye to “Bah humbug” with our top five Christmas activities to help you get into the festive spirit...

1) Outdoor ice skating

Bring a touch of adrenaline to your festive build up by visiting an outdoor ice rink. These fun places tend to pop up in most town squares and city centres in the lead up to Christmas, and can be a great way to boost your excitement.

Head to your local rink with family or friends, and enjoy an evening of wrapping up warm and skating in the festive surroundings. Bonus points if you stay on your feet!

2) Bake some Christmas treats

It’s not Christmas without the treats! Overindulgence is probably inevitable at this time of year. Even if you’re trying not to overdo it, one or two sweet treats won’t do any harm. And spending an afternoon baking some homemade delicacies is a great way to get into the festive spirit.

Whether you’re spending a cosy day in, or need a fun family activity that the kids will love, baking some Christmas biscuits or a festive cake is a perfect plan.

Go for something that includes warming Christmas spices, like gingerbread or cinnamon biscuits. You’ll also get the added bonus of a home filled with inviting festive aromas. Sit your creations proudly atop a metallic placemat on your dining table and treat your guests throughout the holiday season.

3) Make homemade decorations

Another great activity to keep the kids entertained, or to pass the time if you’re into art and crafts, is to create your own Christmas decorations. You can buy baubles and tinsel from most supermarkets and stores at this time of year, but why not create your own unique decorations for a personalised Christmas?

Make origami snowflakes with paper or DIY baubles with glitter and sequins. You could even make a personalised table centrepiece by filling a glass bowl or vase with pretty fairy lights, flowers, or candles.

4) Visit a Christmas market

In the run up to Christmas, seasonal markets pop up around the country, bringing with them delicacies and magical experiences from around the world.

Dig out your hat, scarf and gloves, and head for your nearest Christmas market. As you walk around, your senses will get the full festive experience; the scent of mulled wine, spiced cider, and tasty Christmas food combined with the excited chatter of fellow guests.

Sample some of the food and drink on offer, and browse the craft shops for unique gifts for your loved ones.

5) Watch a Christmas film in bed

If you’ve explored, baked and crafted your way into the festive mood, there’s nothing better than unwinding on a cold December night by sinking into a comfortable bed.

And what could be better than increasing the Christmas excitement by watching a film in your luxurious TV bed? Don’t worry if you don’t have a DVD collection of festive films; all the classics are broadcast on television each year, so there’s sure to be one you’ll love.

Take a warm milky drink upstairs, and relax in the warmth of a double or king size bed with your favourite Christmas movie. The perfect way to get into the festive spirit!
