As Bed Retailer of the Year in 2014 and 2015, we know a thing or two about beds and mattresses here at Furniture Village. In fact, you could say it's our specialist area.
So, we've put together our 8 top tips guide to help you to tell if it's time for a new bed.
1. That sinking feeling
If you look forward to sinking under the sheets at night, but find yourself falling deeper and deeper not into a sleep but towards the base of your bed then it’s time to take action. Even if you are still sleeping soundly, the chances are you’re body has simply got used to the poor quality but it could still be affecting your health and well-being.
2. Things that go lump in the night
Whether you prefer a soft or firm mattress, it should be perfectly smooth. Any uneven areas could be a sign that mattress springs have sprung, seriously affecting its purpose. Invest in a new mattress and bed and you’ll be amazed at the difference the right support can make.
3. Nightmare stains
You may have the prettiest covers but if the mattress underneath is unsightly, it’s time to change more than the bed sheets for a fresher night’s sleep. We spend hours every day asleep and all the sweat and dust we create can end up stuck in the mattress, creating unpleasant stains and even smells too.
4. Rolling in your sleep
Find yourself going to sleep on one side of the bed and waking up trapped in the middle somewhere? Your saggy mattress is past its best and it’s time to send it to the scrap heap.
5. The time is right
Taking a close look at your mattress will help you spot signs of wear and tear but if you’re still not sure, check the date. We recommend changing your mattress at least every eight years so if it’s been that long since you made your purchase, it’s time to go shopping again.
6. It’s all about the base
The mattress is a key part of getting a good night’s sleep but it can be a false economy to simply replace it and put it on an old bed base or bed frame. It can become worn and mean that no matter how much you spend on a new mattress, it won’t be able to do its job properly.
7. Fusty fabric
Beds with thickly padded fabric headboards, such as sumptuous velvet, are a real piece of luxury. But after years of enjoyment, they can become faded, marked and threadbare. This can ruin a stylish look. If this reminds you of your bed, you need to swap shabby for chic so you have sweet dreams once again.
8. What lies beneath
Has your bed become a dumping ground? Do you hang clothes off it, pile towels along the sides and shove shoes underneath? Replace your bed frame with a divan bed base or ottoman bed that will give you lots of hidden storage and create a more restful atmosphere in your new, uncluttered space.
