Borgen, The Killing, The Bridge, The Legacy, Fortitude. The past few years has brought a host of gripping Scandinavian dramas to our TV screens. Many viewers confess that they’ve been as gripped by the cool Nordic interior design schemes as they have by the dramas (not to mention the subtitles).
So why are we falling in love with Scandi style? Perhaps we’re attracted to it because it doesn’t try too hard. Its purity and functionality is very appealing, ideal for those who prefer to keep clutter and fuss to a minimum.
1950s or mid-century modern design works beautifully in Scandinavian schemes. British furniture meets this brief perfectly, we love the curved Ercol Originals tables and chairs with their splayed legs, the solid elm and beech hand finished, giving each piece a soft sheen. The Butterfly chair is a design classic, while the distinctively shaped Love Seat will add charm to any kitchen.
Scandi style warms up its clean, minimal design with gorgeous woods. Oak furniture works well, the Bordeaux dining table and bench show off the rich natural grain.
Rugs and textiles soften a clean-lined and minimal scheme. The Braided Wool rug has a lovely texture, and as it’s 100% wool it’s wonderfully soft underfoot. A faux fur thrown across the back of a sofa adds luxury and comfort.
The pale palette of Scandinavian décor is a response to the limited daylight hours in Nordic countries in the winter. Interiors have to be as bright as possible to maximise and reflect what light there is. This fresh look will give any room a Spring like feel.
Bright white or soft grey walls and floors could seem stark, but as a neutral canvas they allow colours to shine. A brightly coloured rug or vase will make a real impact in a Scandinavian influenced interior. Geometric patterns look good too, for example the Nordic rug in grey. Simple and understated accessories such as the Arabic wall clock will blend in beautifully, for a cool and sophisticated look.
The clean lines of this cool and minimal style partner beautifully with interesting, contrasting textures and modern shapes. Asymmetric design is very in style, and the Content by Conran tall shelving is a beautiful example, as is the eye-catching spiral shape of the Argenta floor lamp.
There is so much to love about Scandi style. Metallics such as the stylish retro Gaucho kitchen pendant lamp, natural woods and contemporary tiling sit side by side with glass and sleek, curved high gloss furniture. The mixture of materials and textures are united by the simple, functional design.
Are you inspired by Nordic influenced design? Create the look in your home with bright, neutral walls and floors, simply designed furniture, warm woods, textured natural textiles, metallics and interesting artwork, glass or ceramics.
Then sit back and enjoy relaxed and easy living, Scandi style.
